Your guide to setting up an ecommerce website
So you want to start selling your products online? Net Starter’s Net Ecommerce package provides the perfect website
solution for you to manage your products and sell your products online. But before you can start collecting the dollars there are a few steps you need to complete to become ecommerce compliant.
1. Setting up a Merchant Account with your bank.
A merchant account is a type of bank account that enables your business to accept payments by credit card either manually or in real time. The first step is setting up a merchant account with your preferred bank. Net Starter recommends National but any of the major banks provide a similar service. Allow yourself a couple of weeks to have this set up as you could run into a couple of obstacles along the way. There is usually a once off setup cost of around a couple of hundred dollars and then the usual merchant charges of a few % per transaction (both vary from bank to bank).
2. Now the decision as to how to process your transactions?
Net Starter offers two options for processing payments made through your website:
a. Real Time Credit Card Payments (recommended for high volume sales)
Allows you to accept credit card payments in "Real Time", ie. When a customer on your website makes an order with their credit card, the order would be sent via a "Payment Gateway" to your merchant bank account, hence the payment is processed automatically live in real time.
A payment gateway is a software program that integrates to a merchant's website and allows real time credit card processing (authorising and settlement) of payments securely on the Internet to the merchant's bank account.
b. Manual Credit Card Payments (suitable for low volume sales)
Allows you to accept credit card payments "Manually", ie. when a customer on your website makes an order with their credit card, the order would be sent to you via email and your customers credit card information will be stored securely on the hosting server. You would log in with a user name and password to retrieve the credit card details, then you would process the payment yourself by contacting your bank or using the online merchant facility provided by your bank (entered through a web browser).
