NSW Legal Costs Consultant
Roland Matters provides legal costing services to New South Wales legal practitioners and their clients in relation to retainers (engagements) between them. These can be litigious engagements (i.e. court or tribunal proceedings) in Commonwealth, New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions or non-litigious engagements (i.e. non-court matter advice and transactional work).
Roland Matters also provides legal costing services to practitioners and clients from other states and territories of Australia who are litigating in Commonwealth, New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.
What all of this means is that Roland Matters is engaged to assist in the working out of the proper remuneration of such legal practitioners in respect of the work that they undertake and the payments that they make to third persons and entities (e.g. process servers, experts etc) in providing their legal services. Similarly, Roland Matters also assists in working out the proper remuneration between parties to litigation when a court or tribunal has ordered that one party indemnify (i.e. pay) the other party’s reasonable legal costs of the litigation before it (usually because the receiving party has been successful in establishing or defending a claim at law).
The above work is recognized in the Australian legal system as a field of specialised knowledge and is most often referred to as ‘Legal Costs’.

Roland Matters Legal Costs Work History
Roland Matters began legal costing work in 1985 for his father, Clarrie Matters, the co-founder of the Sydney legal costing firm, Driscoll & Matters, on a part-time basis and became a principal of that firm in 1992. In the period 1993 - 2004, he provided legal costing services with his wife, Janet McDonald and their employees as Driscoll & Matters and as Driscoll, Matters & McDonald. In 2004, the practice was acquired by DG Thompson and he became the Managing Solicitor of DG Thompson Driscoll + Matters. Following an 18 month period in Brisbane, establishing the Brisbane office of DG Thompson Driscoll + Matters, he resigned and returned to Sydney, commencing provision of legal costing services in his own name.
As a consequence of the above, he now has some twenty years of practice and has undertaken thousands of engagements. He is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and of the High Court of Australia and holds a current unrestricted solicitors’ practicing certificate issued by the Law Society of New South Wales.
