Candles - Get to know Candles

A candle is a light source radiating off an inner wick buried inside a column of solid fuel. Before the mid 19th century, candles were made of tallow, a by-product of beef fat rendering. Today, all the candles are made of some from of wax but mainly of paraffin wax. You can also find Gel, soy, beeswax, and vegetable-based candles. Candle manufacturers are known as chandlers. The Candle’s wick is pre-soaked with fuel in its solid form. The heat generated by a match or another flame used to light the candle, melts and vaporizes a small amount of fuel. This vaporized fuel mixes with oxygen in the atmosphere forming a flame. The flame produces enough heat for candles continuous burning via a series of self-sustaining events. The mass of solid fuel liquefied by the flame’s heat, moves upward through the wick via capillarity motion, to vaporize and burn within the candle's flame.

In the blue, hotter regions, hydrogen separated from the fuel burns forming water vapour. The bright yellow colour of the outer region is the result of remaining carbon being oxidized to form carbon dioxide.

The candle grows shorter as the flame melts and consumes the mass of solid fuel. Remaining bits of the wick not evaporating the liquid fuel should ideally get consumed in the flame. Exposed length of the wick should be of a limited height to maintain a constant temperature and a fuel consumption rate. Some wicks need manual trimming for smooth burning.
