Australian Visa - General Skilled Immigration

Purpose of the Australian visa for General Skilled Immigration is to attract people that have skills valuable to Australia. If considered qualified to apply for an Australian visa for skilled migration, you will be granted permanent residence in Australia. To be eligible for skilled migration, you or your spouse must satisfy the following basic requirements:

Age

You should be below the age of 45 at the time you apply.

English language

You should have sufficient English language skills i.e. vocational English, required for working in Australia.

Qualifications

You need to have university or trade qualifications, or in some rare cases, substantial work experience in the related field. Under this category you must get your skills assessed by the relevant Australian assessing body prior applying for your Australian visa.

Occupation

You should choose a skilled occupation that best fits your skills and qualifications. The chosen occupation should also be included in the Skilled Occupations List.

Recent Work Experience

To be qualified for an Australian visa issued for skilled migration you need to show that you have relevant work experience in your chosen occupation for a set period of time. However if you are an international student this might not be considered a requirement.

Australia Skilled Migration - Points Tested

Usually in order to qualify for skilled migration you would be required to pass the skilled migration points test. If you have relatives who are Australian citizens it may be easier for you to pass this test.

Australia Skilled Migration - Designated Area Sponsored

If you have an Australian relative living in a designated area, you may qualify for skilled migration even if you fail the points test. Designated areas are the whole of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, ACT, NT, and areas in other states outside capital cities.

Australian Visa - Family Sponsorship Migration

If you have immediate family who are Australian citizens, they can sponsor you for Australian migration visa or permanent residence. If you are married to an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, you are eligible to apply for permanent residence on spouse grounds.

Partner Migration

If married to, about to marry or live in an actual relationship with an Australian national, permanent resident or a New Zealander currently living in Australia, your partner can sponsor you for an Australian permanent residence visa.

Skilled Australian Sponsored Visas

If you have Australian relatives, this may greatly improve your chances of qualifying for skilled migration. You should be below 45, and be a manager, professional, associate professional or tradesperson to qualify.

Parent Visas

An Australian Parent Visa enables Australian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their parents, if they are not living in Australia to migrate to Australia. In some situations, the visa may be applied for while the parent is in Australia. Eligibility depends on the number of children the applicant has, and how many of them are permanent residents in Australia.

Australian Visa - Business Migration

Under this category, senior executives with management experience in large overseas corporations are given permanent residency in Australia. When in Australia, they are expected to establish or make a considerable investment in an Australian business.

Investment-Linked Visa

Investment-Linked Visas are granted for business investors who have substantial amounts of capital and are willing to invest in an Australian Government Security for a fixed term. After migrating to Australia they are expected to engage in some form of business or investment activity.

Existing Business in Australia

This type of visa is granted if you currently hold a significant stake in an Australian business, and want to stay in Australia for at least nine months to manage that business. Least capital outlay is required.

Business Sponsorship Migration

Business Sponsorship Migration is an Australian visa issued for overseas employees sponsored by an Australian company for temporary or permanent residence in Australia. The visa will be granted on the condition that the applicant takes up a skilled position with the sponsoring organisation. Representatives of foreign companies, which intend to open a branch office in Australia, may also qualify. To work in Australia on a company-sponsored visa, you must find a job with an Australian company before applying for your visa.
